Thiruchendur Kandasashti Festival -2009
Some 200,000 devotees of Lord Muruga throng the Tiruchendur temple on the Bay of Bengal for the annual Kandasashti - Soora samharam festival. They camp at the shrine, oberve austerities like fasting and listening the whole day to spiritual discourses.
Based on their experience over past several years, the slot with Thean amudham satsangees has become an elixir for these devotees. This year was no exception. The three hours that they spent with Shri.Arunji was made exhilirating with some ten peacocks coming together and dancing away to all the bhajans till the finale late in the evening. The male leader of the Peacock group arrived to the lilting Kavadi bhajan and at once began displaying its plumage into a spectacular fan. Other males in the group followed suit and the devotees were ecstatic watching this unusual spectacle. Special thanks to Sri.Sundaresan for capturing these romanchak divine moments.

ஸ்ரீ அருண் ஜி அவர்களின் "அர்த்தமுள்ள சம்ப்ரதாயங்கள்".

நாம் அன்றாடம் கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டிய பழக்க வழக்கங்களையும், மரபுகளையும் பற்றி கூற பல நூல்கள் இருந்தாலும், அதற்கான காரணங்களை பற்றி கூற சில நூல்களே உள்ளன. அந்த வகையில் ஒரு சிறந்த book தான் ஸ்ரீ அருண் ஜி அவர்களின் "அர்த்தமுள்ள சம்ப்ரதாயங்கள்". நாம் நம் வாழ்கையில் பல மரபுகளை நமது முன்னோர்கள் கூறியதால், "ஏன்" என்ற கேள்வியே கேட்காமல் கண்ணை மூடிக்கொண்டு ஒரு குருடனை போல கடைப்பிடிப்பதில் எந்த அர்த்தமும் இல்லை. இதில் மிக வருத்தமான விஷயம் என்னவென்றால் பல கோயில் அர்ச்சகர்களுக்கும், நமது வீட்டிற்கு வரும் ப்ரோகிதர் களுக்குமே இந்து மதத்தில் புதைந்து கிடக்கும் பல உண்மைகள் தெரிவதில்லை என்பதுதான். இவற்றிற்கு பதில் தரும் நூல்தான் "அர்த்தமுள்ள சம்ப்ரதாயங்கள்".

The Art of Understanding Hindu Rituals
There are dime a dozen books in the market that can catalogue the various rituals and oblations every devout Hindu has to perform on a daily basis. You can follow them verbatim and day in and day out carry on performing umpteen rituals mechanically without understanding as well as appreciating their very meaning and significance.
Only a very few books explain the underlying rationale behind the rituals, giving the performer a perspective of why he/she is doing something. “Sampradaya” – A Tribute to Tradition, by Arunji, a banker turned Theologian and a Senior Faculty in Art of Living, is one such gem.
