Here is an interesting backdrop on this special day.In the Krita Yuga or The Golden age, an asura named Muran was troubling humanity. Everyone went to Lord Shiva, but he directed them to Lord Vishnu and it was on this day that Vishnu’s female energy emerged out of his body and vanquished the asura. Lord Vishnu was pleased and named the female energy as Ekadasi. He blessed her with the power to free the sins of people who take fast on this day. He also declared that people worshipping her would reach Vaikunta, the Gateway to Heaven will be kept open on this day. Worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi on this day is very auspicious.
