Vaikunda Ekadasi at Karmadai Ranganathar Temple Coimbatore

We are delighted to advise that Dr.Arun Madhavanji will be leading the Nama samkirtan at the Karamadai Ranganathar Aalayam on the auspicious Vaikunda Ekadasi 6.30pm onwards on  5th January 2012.

Here is an interesting  backdrop on this special day.In the Krita Yuga or The Golden age, an asura named Muran was troubling humanity. Everyone went to Lord Shiva, but he directed them to Lord Vishnu and it was on this day that Vishnu’s female energy emerged out of his body and vanquished the asura. Lord Vishnu was pleased and named the female energy as Ekadasi. He blessed her with the power to free the sins of people who take fast on this day. He also declared that people worshipping her would reach Vaikunta, the Gateway to Heaven will be kept open on this day.  Worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi on this day is very auspicious.

All are Welcome

Thaen Amudham Satsang in Jaffna Sri Lanka

“The ‘Aho’ moments in my life!

Excerpts from Dr.Arun Madhavanji’s address during the satsang at the Karpagam Auditorium after the Awards ceremony:

“The ‘Aho’ moments in my life!
It is said that the road of life can only reveal itself as it is traveled; each turn in the road reveals a surprise. My life journey has taken many unpredicted and astonishing twists.

There is a common perception that in order to get ahead in life, one shouldn’t give up. An opportunity presented itself very early in life – when only seven years of age and conscious about personal grooming. I was given the opportunity to don the role of the mythical Baladhandayudhapani (aka.Karthikeya) in a theatrical presentation on the Annual Day of the School. My dad who encouraged me to take up the role suggested two options for a realistic portrayal – either wear a wig or shave off the hair completely! Though conscious about what others perceived as very aesthetic locks of hair, I opted for giving up the crown completely to make it authentic. Perhaps the seeds for ‘giving up’ were sown then. Some years later in 1962 when the Chief Minister felicitated me for Academic excellence with five gold medals; I had the wonderful privilege and opportunity to return the entire lot for the National Defence Fund keeping in mind the then ongoing efforts to build resources during the Indo-China war.

My peer group mocked at my choice of doing graduate studies in Loyola College, as in early sixties, students of this Institution were taunted with the phrase the ‘Slaves of Loyola’ by other front- ranking college friends. Today it is a top ranking destination for academics and the very same friends seek admission for their wards here! Equally they were derisive and surprised at my choice of PG studies at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Today IIMA stands tall as one of the Best Business Schools in the world! My choice of the then Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China was found laughable. Apart bearing a name that was mouthful, it was not deemed a hot shot employer, ranking a poor seventh in the ranking of overseas banks operating in India. Towards the time when I opted to go on voluntary retirement, the Bank has already notched up the first position.

It was a ‘aho’ moment when invited me for Tea at the Raj Bhavan following my nomination on Prime Minister’s Special Project for Integrated Rural Development under 20 point program. The decision to forgo a lucrative corporate career to get into voluntary work in mid-forties was a thunderbolt surprise and shocker to bank customers, family and friends. It was an aho moment when Sri Sri gave me a bigger canvas to work on some very useful community initiatives.

The communiqué from Karpagam about conferring the Doctoral honor was another adding to the list of aho moments! ‘Karpagam’ incidentally is the mythical holy tree in heaven. It gives whatever one wants from it. Like the mythical tree itself, the Mother blesses her sincere devotees not only with all they pray for but also shower them with surprises. Today I look up to her seeking greater strength and commitment to serve the humanity better and bigger. A regular Doctor’s focus is more repairing the Body whilst your doctor will continue to focus on Body-Mind-soul.

Advanced Meditation Course Part II with Shri.Arunji at Pune

After the recent rains in Pune and surroundings, the  AOL  Merkel campus was swathed in green providing a perfect picture post card  setting for the amc. Over a dozen of the cows from the in-house Goshala had expansive green belt by the riverside  to graze in freedom and  nourish themselves.

Those in the Meditation hall were equally engaged in nourishing  their body-mind and Soul. With Shravan Purnima intervening the Rivers  Bhima-Bhama  were in full flow in close proximity to the meditation hall.

Memorable moments at Sri Villiputtur

For centuries, the auspicious Thiru Aadipooram festival is attracting devotees in very large numbers. The Andal shrine known as Natchiar Thirumaligai, is an architectural wonder with an intricately designed gopuram. The Vimanam above the sanctum sanctorum depicts scenes from the renowned ‘Thiruppavai' sung by Sri Andal in praise of the Lord.

The movement of the Car chariot, the biggest in Asia, was an awesome sight to behold; not surprising as  it was carrying  Bhudevi (Mother Earth ) in all Her Majesty  and splendour with the  galaxy of Gods and demigods present.

Shri.Arunji led a divine satsang on the penultimate night before the legendary Car festival that marked the finale of the festival  embellished with memorable moments.

An invitation to Thiru Aadi Pooram festival at Sri Villiputtur

The primary landmark of Sri Villiputtur is the 11-tiered tower structure dedicated to the Lord Vatapatrasayee. The tower  rises 192 feet high and is the official symbol of the Government of Tamilnadu. It is said to have been built by Periyaazhvar with a purse of gold that he won in debates held in the palace of Pandya King Vallabhadeva. Due to the divine birth of Sri Andal in this town, it got the honorific of Srivilliputhur eventully to become part of the celebrated 108 Divya Desams.

Thousands of people throng the temple town every year to participate in the fortnight long Thiru Aadi Pooram festival and to witness the annual car festival. The festival marks the adoption of presiding deity, Sri Aandal, by Periyazhwar after he had found her near a Tulsi plant in the nandavanam of Vatapatrasayee Temple.

Shri.Arunji will lead a Divya satsang on Monday, the 1st August 2011 from 7pm onwards with Govindan Pugazh paadum keerthanaigal.   The car festival commences 8am following morning.

Guru Purnima in the Royal City:

Over the centuries gone by, the Royal City of Mysore has been under  different dynasties like the Ganga Kings, followed by the Cholas, Hosyalas and the Vijayanagar kings, eventually in 1399,  to become the capital of the Wodeyars. Today Mysore is a modern city that has still managed to retain its quaint old world charm.

The City witnessed heavy rains the previous night ( 14th July 2011) and a repeat performance  from the skies was forecast on the next day as well. It did not deter the public from turning up for the Guru Purnima celebrations at one of the very nice auditoriums located in Manasa Gangotri. The green, sylvan surroundings  of the campus was eye catching.

The AOL family  presented a well rounded program for Gurupurnima- commencing with a Puja, cultural dance items presented by ArtExcel kids and two hours of soothing Celestial Nectar  bhajans.  A group of  overseas enthusiasts under the guidance of  one of our teachers from Bali,Indonesia joined the colourful celebrations. She sang a beautiful bhajan in Balinese and kept the audience in raptures. The Celestial Nectar evening was laced with nice anecdotes from Shri.Arunji to highlight the importance of the event. A deep full moon meditation left the audience refreshed.

Guru Poornima Celebrations lead by Shri ARUNJI at Mysore, 15th July 2011

The moon shines by reflecting the dazzling light of the sun. On the Full Moon Day it reflects in full splendor the glorious light of the sun. This is the time when we go deeper and purify ourselves through the fire of Service, Sadhana and Satsang; and like the full moon, become holistic and reflect the glorious Light of the Atman.

The Guru is the one who removes the fundamental ignorance, maya that hides the knowledge of truth from us. This is the time when we offer our reverence to him and the lineage of Masters for imparting precious knowledge that puts an end to distress and sheds cool comfort on our minds.

The AOL family Mysore  celebrates Guru Poornima this year with a Divya Satsang on Friday, 15th July 2011 at the Senate Bhavan, Manasa Gangotri Campus, Mysore. Shri.Arun Madhavanji will lead the satsang from 6.30 pm onwards.

ALL ARE WELCOME.

Shri.Arunji’s Tribute to Pitaji at the Shradanjali held at the Bangalore Ashram on 9th June 2011

1924-2011. The hyphen marking the 87 years is indeed significant.  It was a life fully lived. As I am standing before you all to pay this tribute, it is being heard even by the flora and fauna of this beautiful campus. We fondly remember that it was Pitaji who began the efforts to green the otherwise dry rocky landscape by planting hundreds of saplings. They are now bearing flowers and fruits and home for bees and birds. This time of the evening they are listening to this in silence.

Ancient Egyptians believed that upon death, they would be asked two questions. Their answers would determine whether they could continue their journey in the afterlife. The first question was, "Did you bring joy?" The second was, "Did you find joy?" There cannot a better tribute to late Pitaji with the answers being a rousing YES to both.

Easily approachable with a disarming smile on his face, Pitaji lived a full life with enthusiasm and a steely resolve to complete his mission.  Kishoreda recalls “He demonstrated courage when the legitimately allotted land was being encroached. When we arrived at the undeveloped campus, stones were being hurled at all of us. Pitaji said – ‘fine, but we will carry on with our work!   He was unstoppable; but for this courage, we wouldn’t be standing where we are today!”

Chitra Madhavan recalls an unforgettable gesture of Pitaji when he turned up with his vehicle at the City Railstation to fetch us when the entire Bangalore city went without public transport of any kind due to a bandh.  We asked him why he took the risk – he just smiled with the words ‘you both are part of me!’

He remained undaunted amidst times of uncertainty and challenges whilst running projects that now find place in the many arms of The Art of Living today. His inspiration to me is captured and etched in the words – “An attempt may be a failure, but there should not be a failure to attempt.”

Our experience with him during AOL’s first Advanced Meditation Course in Bangalore was memorable. This was much before our present ashram was ready. Being a great lover of nature, he took a dozen of us on a journey to many adorable spots in Karnataka. There was not a dull moment as he would keep us enthralled with wisdom- filled anecdotes and legendary tales.  An off shoot of all this can be seen in his most popular book –“More light on the less known”.

He always cherished projects that equipped girl-youth with skills and knowledge. He envisioned that in their role as future mothers, they would groom better children of tomorrow with values. Thus began his worthy project VISTA, a women empowerment project. Undeterred by lack of financial and human resources, he traveled far and wide to raise funds and sustain the project.

We remember once when he got back from Europe, he got the kitchen staff in Vista trained in the art of brewing Colombian Coffee. This item was soon to become part of his unforgettable trademark hospitality

His visionary passion was to combine Veda, the reservoir of knowledge and Vignan, the modern science so as to reap the benefits of both. Ved Vignan Maha Vidya Peeth is a standing testimony for this dream.  He kept reminding us that the ultimate aim of The Art of Living should be to look with sympathy at those who are less fortunate rather than look with envy at those who are lucky, to go to serve rather than wait to be served. His commitment to Sidha system of medicine was known to all and perhaps this was one area where he wanted to create greater awareness amongst people.

A role model is hard to define, because it can be different for everyone. Often, it is someone you would like to be like when you get older, or someone who does something you find hard to do.  Pitaji was someone who performed outstanding volunteer work.  He was brave, strong, kind, thoughtful and fun.

Reverential prayer to Devi the Universal Mother.

These clippings are excerpts from a spiritual function conducted by Shri Arun Madhavanji, wherein, shri.Arunji renders this beautiful song in obeisance to Devi the Univeral Mother. Guruji's Birthday Celebration at Coimbatore

A Celebration is usually  to observe an occasion either with festivity or  prayerful ceremony 13th May 2011 provided the devotees in Coimbatore with an all-in-one experience whilst celebrating  G's birthday . Ceremonies began  with a grand  Guru puja by all Teachers followed by a pulsating, yet melodious bhajan evening led by Shri.Arunji.

One of the biggest halls in the Textile city was hired for the celebration  but it proved inadequate to fit in the large numbers who turned up.They poured in not only from the City but all  neighbouring Districts - some even visiting from Mumbai to soak into an evening of Celestial bliss. The event was truly memorable to hundreds of newcomers to AOL who could experience the Celebrations at times dancing and at times in silence and meditation.

Musings from Part II amc at Sanchalan Bhavan: 5-8 May 2011

This meditation course for me was literally postponed for a little over 3 years.

In as much as is wont – to blame it on the human nature – my professional responsibilities actually kept me away from any AMC centre in India! I was planning for doing the AMC in Bangalore on 13th May and tried to book my tickets; first the web- site malfunctioned half way of booking the tickets and subsequent efforts gave rise to some hiccup or the other.

I always believe in the forces of nature – that being my nature – hence gave up the idea of AMC .It was then that I got a call from Arunji himself stating that he is coming to Hyderabad to take up the course.

I have been missing all Arunji  recent courses  in Andhra Pradesh which I may term as ‘coveted’ in Thiruvannamalai, Rajmundri, Vizag, Bhadrachalam ,Annavaram. Perhaps, I wondered, was I destined to be treated to this course –‘home’ delivered ?And so it was. My clients - know that I open ‘shop’ at 5 am and work through weekends. I was thinking of how to answer such calls – since this was a crucial time for many a Board Meeting or annual closing of accounts. I have stopped being amazed by Gurudev’s ways . The four days that I was in AMC was not only devoid of any calls there were no messages either. To top it all there was a call on Monday asking if I was ‘free’ to discuss some matter!

The course itself was like a song – literally! Every session conducted by Arunji was with an invocation – musical or vocal and Arunji’s voice itself was a lullaby.

Three days of experience, put it in a truncated capsule, the contents of the course were overflowing with ‘madhuryam. The ppt gave a visual dimension to the course proceedings and many a brain cell turned grey (with knowledge)

Many of acting skills were put forth, many tried in vain to communicate and many slapped their forehead in frustration of being misunderstood. What emerged was loud wholesome laughter and a through auto movement of belly button, rib cage and painful jaws (due to the spontaneous laughs). The highlight of humour was that of a participant signaling for a bottle of water (as she was thirsty) to be interpreted by a pull of the ears by the respondent and an aghast- look that ‘drinking ‘was strictly prohibited during the course!!

My father being in silence wrote on a paper and showed the following message to my wife. “This course has Prasad overflowing with energy” to which I – also being in silence wrote back and showed to all the fellow participants “my whole life is a course (discourse) and this is one more chapter.

It had to be and was so - indeed since I personally felt that

“ aa  madhavudu – chainchedu ee arun madhava dwara

kanuka adbhootam tappa vere vakyam ledu “

That Madhav  Lord Krishna – Gurudev , did  through this Madhav ( ‘arunji )  therefore there cannot be any other word  other than ‘ par excellence’ !!)

For the last ten years in AOL  my interaction with Arunji  was that of a mentor –mentee senior Administrator - colleague- , an inspirational source - but after this he adorned a new avatar in my life as an ‘acharya’  from whom I have learned so much .

Like all AMC and all  Acharyas chosen by Gurudev – each AMC helped in ‘fanning the embers of awareness ‘ so important for the participants to make a difference to the society they live in; and Arunji made many a ‘ fan’  in the ‘fanning’ process .!!
