Painted prayers that protect homes:

Several years ago a friend of mine from W.B came on a visit to Chennai. He was engaged in the study of the electro-magnetic vibrational energy field. In those days, multi storied apartments in the city were rare. As we went on our morning walks, we used to witness women and girls outside the doorsteps of their homes, engaged in the decorative art of kolam, popularly known as Rangoli. Depending on the floor, they were using wet or dry rice powders both white and in colours. Their designs kept changing every day and the motifs ranged from small to big to match the significance of the day. My friend was fascinated by these intricate designs and ran his energy detecting devices over some of them out of sheer curiosity. We were indeed astonished by the field of aura emanating from these decorative motifs. The study of energy field surrounding this fascinating art form is well documented  in ancient scriptures.

In praise of Annakoot:

4 -11-2017

Last evening was at a ceremony of Annakoot. The name refers to a mountain of food; some fifty-six food items - chappan bhog, prepared afresh and offered to the deities. It has been part of our Sampradaya for ages. It relates to the incident described in Bhagavat Puran when Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to provide villagers of Brindavan shelter from torrential rains. Metaphorically how God will protect all devotees who take singular refuge in Him.

Returning home read news from the Capital that a team led by a celebrity chef, set a world record when they cooked 918 kg of khichdi at the World Food India event. Thankfully NGOs and Gurudwaras take over distribution of mega khichdi among orphans and 60,000 other people. The effort may gain recognition from Guinness but cannot perhaps take away the scale and pride of Annakoot of yore!

Reflections on a Tradition:

Was invited recently to an inaugural and do the opening honors.

What began as a rope cutting ritual, centuries ago,  stands transformed today into a more elegant ribbon-cutting. Records have it that the first historic ribbon-cutting ceremony happened in 1898 to mark the opening of a railroad line in Northern Louisiana. Ever since, the ritual began to mark the beginning of any new activity, be it the launch of a newly built boat or business.

It is also traditional component of wedding ceremonies in some western countries. The bride or her father cuts a ribbon stretched across the door of the family home, symbolizing her new found freedom and leaving her life as a maiden behind. In essence ribbon-cutting has come to symbolize freeing or opening something.
In vaastu sastra and vedic rituals, we have a component called Digbandana – closing bounded space or water filled vessels with sacred threads for insulation of divine vibrations and opening them at the end of sacred chants and japa.

Why do I have a string in my finger?

Brain fog:

In the previous Century when landlines were in vogue, people could recall several names and numbers with STD codes effortlessly. This scenario has changed. With the emergence of cell phones and portable devices, the memory storage has been conveniently out sourced to the gadgets! These gadgets store reams of personal information resulting in our brains being under-stimulated.

Our growing reliance on electronic devices for even the simplest tasks is perhaps dulling our minds. People are now prone to forget boring, yet important details.  They tend to forget addresses, passwords, phone numbers and birthdays.  Research studies attribute this to medications, antidepressants, antihistamines, smoking, illicit drugs, sleep deprivation, nutritional deficiency (especially in vitamin B1 and B12) head injury and strokes.

Let’s not take it hard. In a scenario where we are flooded with huge amounts of information, the brain is not able to process everything at once. Even though it has a memory folder, if we don't make a special effort to remember the facts, they will only have a short shelf-life. A great way to remember boring facts is to construct a short and simple story. If you connect a memory to something else, you never forget, like:  “my daughter’s birthday is a week after the new year".  Suppose you need to remember a password number 968517 you can imagine a story in which a 96-year old grandfather married to an 85-year old dame, has 17 grandchildren!
Sometimes, after locking up the house on the way out, you don't remember and doubt yourself if you turned the gas stove off, or switched off lights inside.   It will be much easier to remember if you have something else to recall.  Every time you turn off the stove, say loudly: "I turned off the stove" to yourself!

Most people learn visually instead of orally, which explains why we usually remember faces but are quite bad with names. There are times you run into someone you met a few days ago, but you already forgot their name! This is one of the most common memory problems. Next time you meet someone new, look at them really well and repeat their name for yourselves at least three times. Use it in the conversation, as we tend to remember those better than just names.

You don't remember where you put the keys, glasses, wallet or your sun glasses. This is usually an attention problem. When we go into the house in a huff, while lost in thought or maybe talking on the phone, our mind wanders ; as  usual, if we don't make it clear to the brain that we must remember . Therefore add an action to the putting down and say: "This is where I'm putting my keys, on the armchair of the sofa." It will give you important clues later of where to look for. A better way would be to keep a large bowl next to the entry door, where you drop off these items.

You are having a hard time remembering words, names of books, actors and old tunes?  This is a universal problem and it gets worse the older we get. Let go of stress, it is the killer of memory. Clear your head and focus only on the words you are trying to find. Sometimes, the word seems to be right on the tip of our tongue, but we can't get to it as the actual biological pathway in the brain to that word is blocked.  No amount of 'trying to remember' will help. You have to find a way around. When we’re trying to find the word 'University', it's right on the tip of our tongue, but we can't remember it exactly. Try then to think of: 'college', 'student', 'municipality' and so on. These will help approach the word from a different direction or path!

It is encouraging that many institutions across the globe now appreciate a very useful tool from our ancient wisdom viz.  Mindfulness Meditation, as a supplemental tool in the task of clearing the brain fog.

The Chaitanya Bharati experience

14-17th February 2013

The Art of Silence retreat at Chaitanya Bharati Hall saw  a large and enthusiastic  group of participants soaking up in knowledge. The finale and the icing on the cake was a well choreographed ballet performed by Teacher Srinivas and  course participants to  Parameswaraya sashisekharaya- the nostalgic composition of Arunji.

Samplers of  participant  feedback  given below:

Bhavani wrote:

A sweet memory to cherish as our advance course with you remains - has left an indelible impression on our minds - rejuvenated us body, mind and soul - given us all a welcome confirmation that we are on the right path, for buying a ticket to stress-free life and fulfilling the purpose of this human life;  the delivery of the message from Yog Vasishta in the simplest and the most enjoyable manner, by a touch of humor as and when apt to do so, and holding together  the entire team of teachers, volunteers and participants as one identity - was something all of us experienced -  I am only a mouthpiece for all. Awesome! Awe-inspiring!!

"This course came at a critical juncture in my life. A lot of tumult. I had just moved on from my previous venture. I was faced with a challenging situation in my life – almost a turning point. That is the time I got a call from Deepika telling me about the course on experience of silence. I had “tried” to attend his course in Dec 2012 too, but could not. This time I made sure I could make it. A business trip immediately after the course did not deter me.

The experience was awesome. The silence. The hollow and empty meditations. The beautiful explanations of Yoga Vasistha, and the explanations that Arunji provided  were incomparable. It gave me a new perspective. He conveyed the knowledge in such an easy way… it was so easy to grasp such  deep  wisdom. .. right from the word go when he came into the hall and wished us. Always had a nice and pleasant smile, and his calming and re-assuring  presence.

I came back with lot of energy and resolve to face the challenges in my life… being a lion is important…  I am reminded of the point of Valor… so needed in professional life. My heart reaches out to gratitude to Arunji, the instrument of Guruji who so touched my life.

"Re-energized, Re-charged, Feeling Fresh and on top of the World. Bring it on !!!!! " was the posting on my facebook wall page at the end of the course -  this sums up my experience of the course and it comes from a person who was reluctant and had to be cajoled to join the course.

The course design is a wonderful blend of Yoga, Methods, Processes, Knowledge sessions, Satsang with a touch of Seva based on a foundation of Silence. I must make a special mention of the knowledge sessions on Yoga Vasistha - these were articulated and presented in such a simple and nice way making it easier to understand and digest.

I take a moment to appreciate and thank Arun Madhavanji - the teacher for this program for his erudite discourse &  for the energy, passion and dedication while delivering this course.

My deep gratitude and salutations to the THE MASTER for creating a wonderful program and giving me an opportunity to learn the same.

I am now equipped with the required tools and methods to internalize the learning's from this program.

Many thanks to Asokanji, Srinivasanji, Deepika Reddy and other volunteers of the AOL community for the wonderful experience they created with flawless execution.

Sripuram Chitrakoot Car Festival- 2012

Valliyur  gets its name from Valli, consort of Lord Muruga.  The town is located midway between  Tirunelveli and Nagercoil in National Highway 7.  Once a shanty village with farmers and shepherds, it is  home for  the beautiful Murugan Temple and the oceanic Valliyoor Kulam, the wide and appeasing Kuravan Malai of Western Ghats, all of which add up to to its beautiful look and feel.  Thirukurungudi one of the celebrated 108 Divyakshetras is only three kms from here.Sripuram  which is part of the town has risen in prominence in recent years  for its vibrant hill called Samiyar Pothai  where a large team of volunteers are engaged in various commendable community initiatives  that include  cultivation of  herbal plants and protection of environment.

The annual Sripuram  Chitrakoot Car-Cultural festival attracts thousands from different regions of the State and beyond. Eminent  artistes, dancers and singers participate in the festival.

26th November 2012, the Thean Amudham team was invited to perform at the festival. Dr.Arunji rendered a musical lecture on the topic Arthamulla Sampradyangal.  It turned out to be an unforgettable evening. The audience was drenched in knowledge and soulful bhajans.

The Domlur Inspiration

The Domlur - Indira Nagar Art of Silence Course ended on an inspiring  note with a brief address by one of our senior local patrons. He narrated how his family fought their way with the State to protect the public land in Domlur which now  proudly houses a Government School, a PU College and play grounds. Often people think that they need financial resources to render seva to the community and the examples shared by him showed that our concern for the Society can also be demonstrated though social activism with genuine intent on common public good.

Participants were drawn  mainly from IT and ITES industry. Evidently, with the feedback already received and still flowing in, the Volunteer team feels fulfilled that their efforts were well directed.

As a parting memento, each participant got a copy of Arunji's latest essay on Joy of Parenthood.

The hidden power of our Art of Silence program:

22-26 September 2012: The Divine satsangs at Tiruppur and during the Art of Silence Course organised by the Temple of Knowledge, Rangasamuthram had memorable moments. The Isai sorpozhivu on Life, A Movie was well received at both the places. There was useful knowledge that captivated the attention of all age groups.

Self effort and Grace at work.

Dr.Arun Madhavan recently returned after conducting our Art of Silence program in a rural location. The course witnessed deep silence kept by the participants. Many of them had to retire to their homes to cook food and take care of their school- going children. Yet they were back to the venue for the morning yoga at the time announced, maintaining strict silence all through. On the final day, when the silence was broken, he saw one participant who looked very content and cheerful to continue with his silence. After the closing ceremonies, Arunji was heading for the airport when the phone rang and the caller introduced himself as the one who didn't break his silence at the course venue. He had a wish to come across to the airport to bid farewell but Arunji dissuaded him. Instead he asked him if there is a location en route the airport where he could wait and meet him. Traffic was smooth all the way until Arunji's car reached a point where the traffic on the right side of the road was packed and stagnant, the left side was free. The host on the wheel saw an ambulance coming in front of him offering little maneuverability of space for the ambulance to pass through. He took the car over the pavement, only to to see the left wheel hanging into a 6 feet canal trench. Upon this sudden development they saw a familiar face rushing to the spot. He put his hand under the chassis to effortlessly lift the stuck vehicle weighing over one tonne and ease it on the road. He was none other than the participant who was waiting there to meet Arunji and his gesture was very timely and swift. After the pleasantries he asked a simple question- How did I do it? Arunji's reply was "your deep silence and spontaneous stretching of your hand gave you this extraordinary energy. There is an aphorism in Sanskrit which affirms this " ‘मौनं सर्वार्थ साधिके’ maunam Sarvartha Satakam". In Bangalore they say in Kannada: ‘summaniru manave, nee brahmanaguve’ ‘Remain quiet, O mind, you will become Brahman.’

Thaen Amudham Divya Satsangs in Kumbakonam and Thiruvarur

19th June 2012 - Deiveega Innisai at the Sarangapani temple  premises. Kumbakonam.

Sarangapani temple is the biggest Vishnu temple in Kumbakonam and it belongs to 13th century. The temple sanctum is designed like a chariot with wheels and is drawn by horses and elephants.

20th June 2012 Thean Amudha Divya satsang at Thiru Chirupuliyur Samprokshanam celebrations
at Thiruvarur.

Thiru Chirupuliyur off Thiruvarur Krupasamudram or Arulmaakadal temple is located at the junction of Mayavaram - Tiruvarur High Road. Lord Ranganatha originally gave darshan to the Rishis in his full form as in Srirangam. Because of their old age, the Rishis could not see the big image of the Lord clearly and hence the Lord appears here in Bala Sayanam as a small kid in sleeping posture. This is one of the only two Divya Desams where the Lord in Sayana Kolam is facing the Southern direction, the other being Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam.

Legend has it that Garuda does not fly over this place! Once Garuda and Adisesha got into an argument as to who was more powerful and devoted to the Lord. Seeing Garuda a little arrogant, Lord Vishnu went in favour of the Serpent God. Worried that Garuda might be angered at this, Adisesha seeks Lord’s protection, upon which Lord asks him to roll himself and lie under him. It is said that as a result of this anger, Garuda never flies over this place. There is a separate shrine for Sri Adhisesha near the pushkarani - known as Ananthalwar Temple. It is said that one will be relieved of Naaga Dosham if one visits this place. Unmarried people and childless couple visit this temple for prayers.

Sage Pulikkal Munivar came to Chirupuliyur and did penance here praying to Lord Narayana to grant him eternal bliss. The Lord obliged and the place was named after the sage as Chirupuliyur. The idol of the Sage is found along with that of Kanvar in the sanctum sanctorum. All episodes connected with this place are found in the fourth chapter of the Brahmanda Puranam. Saint Tirumangai Alvar has glorified the significance of this lord in ten divine hymns.

Car Festival at Koniamman Temple 26.02.2012 - Coimbatore

The  history  of Koniamman  dates back to the13 century A.D. patronized by the Mysore dynasty kings who revered Her as Mahishasuramardhini of Karanataka. It is  believed that the name Coimbatore originated from the name of this deity.

The 90' Rajagopuram  under way  will be the tallest in the region  similar to the Royal Tower of Madurai Meenakshi Temple,  that can be seen from any part of the city.  The temple has a large following of  devotees  from places like Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Kerala,A.P and Karnataka and  equally in countries like  US, Russia, Australia and  UK.

A highlight of the Car Festival  was  an evening of Thean Amudha Isai Malai  by Shri. Arunji  held in the precincts of the temple on Sunday, 26th February 2012. The audience was taken through an enjoyable music yatra in Navarasas. It was a  whole new experience cherished by one and all.

Vaikunda Ekadasi at Karmadai Ranganathar Temple Coimbatore

We are delighted to advise that Dr.Arun Madhavanji will be leading the Nama samkirtan at the Karamadai Ranganathar Aalayam on the auspicious Vaikunda Ekadasi 6.30pm onwards on  5th January 2012.

Here is an interesting  backdrop on this special day.In the Krita Yuga or The Golden age, an asura named Muran was troubling humanity. Everyone went to Lord Shiva, but he directed them to Lord Vishnu and it was on this day that Vishnu’s female energy emerged out of his body and vanquished the asura. Lord Vishnu was pleased and named the female energy as Ekadasi. He blessed her with the power to free the sins of people who take fast on this day. He also declared that people worshipping her would reach Vaikunta, the Gateway to Heaven will be kept open on this day.  Worshipping Goddess Mahalakshmi on this day is very auspicious.

All are Welcome

“The ‘Aho’ moments in my life!

Excerpts from Dr.Arun Madhavanji’s address during the satsang at the Karpagam Auditorium after the Awards ceremony:

“The ‘Aho’ moments in my life!
It is said that the road of life can only reveal itself as it is traveled; each turn in the road reveals a surprise. My life journey has taken many unpredicted and astonishing twists.

There is a common perception that in order to get ahead in life, one shouldn’t give up. An opportunity presented itself very early in life – when only seven years of age and conscious about personal grooming. I was given the opportunity to don the role of the mythical Baladhandayudhapani (aka.Karthikeya) in a theatrical presentation on the Annual Day of the School. My dad who encouraged me to take up the role suggested two options for a realistic portrayal – either wear a wig or shave off the hair completely! Though conscious about what others perceived as very aesthetic locks of hair, I opted for giving up the crown completely to make it authentic. Perhaps the seeds for ‘giving up’ were sown then. Some years later in 1962 when the Chief Minister felicitated me for Academic excellence with five gold medals; I had the wonderful privilege and opportunity to return the entire lot for the National Defence Fund keeping in mind the then ongoing efforts to build resources during the Indo-China war.

My peer group mocked at my choice of doing graduate studies in Loyola College, as in early sixties, students of this Institution were taunted with the phrase the ‘Slaves of Loyola’ by other front- ranking college friends. Today it is a top ranking destination for academics and the very same friends seek admission for their wards here! Equally they were derisive and surprised at my choice of PG studies at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Today IIMA stands tall as one of the Best Business Schools in the world! My choice of the then Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China was found laughable. Apart bearing a name that was mouthful, it was not deemed a hot shot employer, ranking a poor seventh in the ranking of overseas banks operating in India. Towards the time when I opted to go on voluntary retirement, the Bank has already notched up the first position.

It was a ‘aho’ moment when invited me for Tea at the Raj Bhavan following my nomination on Prime Minister’s Special Project for Integrated Rural Development under 20 point program. The decision to forgo a lucrative corporate career to get into voluntary work in mid-forties was a thunderbolt surprise and shocker to bank customers, family and friends. It was an aho moment when Sri Sri gave me a bigger canvas to work on some very useful community initiatives.

The communiqué from Karpagam about conferring the Doctoral honor was another adding to the list of aho moments! ‘Karpagam’ incidentally is the mythical holy tree in heaven. It gives whatever one wants from it. Like the mythical tree itself, the Mother blesses her sincere devotees not only with all they pray for but also shower them with surprises. Today I look up to her seeking greater strength and commitment to serve the humanity better and bigger. A regular Doctor’s focus is more repairing the Body whilst your doctor will continue to focus on Body-Mind-soul.

Interaction with the Youth

19th march saw a Subh Vidha to well over thousand graduates from Engineering and Humanities entering their working careers. Shri.Arunji was the Chief Guest at a special event where he addressed them on "Challenges ahead"
